A year in the life 2016 #180: Vans in contrast

Sebastian and I went out together in our new shoes.

A year in the life 2016 #156: new shoes

Sebastian decided to buy the most boring pair of Vans in the known universe. There were multicoloured ones and checked ones and interesting colours, but no. Boring black it was.

I bought purple ones.

2015 weeks! #48: schemes and themes

Monday morning was all about our new house and choosing the colour scheme. I really wanted to avoid beige, so we have ended up with a whole lot of grey and silver and white. I’m pitching for red couches and possibly blinds. Apparently we got through the whole ordeal in record times – there is something useful about being decisive.

2015-12-07 20.50.03Zachary and George watching TV.

2015-12-08 10.06.53Our Division end of year morning tea was summer themed – hence the umbrellas. Or cocktail umbrellas are fun. Or something.

2015-12-08 17.48.28New t-shirt arrived. With the day I had had, it was completely apt.

2015-12-11 11.01.01

The Christmas theme continued.

Our Departmental Christmas party was cruise-themed. We went with some sort of luau idea. This is me with my boss – it may be the first time she’s been in a selfie which got posted on the internet.

The Carnage end of year get together apparently was themed Brad-drinks-too-much-while-the-rest-of-us-look-on-bemused-entertained-and-occasionally-horrified.

2015-12-13 13.18.51

I did get a lovely Christmas candle from the guys though for my team support work this year.
2015-12-12 10.02.48

Saturday we road-tripped to the Blue Mountains for a junior derby game  – last derby road trip for the year.

We had time for the three brothers to visit the Three Sisters.

And having afternoon tea beforehand.

The boys played well, Zac got to eat cake, James reffed and we all had fun.
2015-12-12 18.37.01

Jude was super-excited to get his first MVP award.

We were back in time for me to take Zac to the cricket Sunday morning. This wasn’t without some drama as one of Zac’s teammates had an absolute tantrum on the field and stormed off which was bad enough and then his mother ended up hitting him twice with the cricket bat, quite hard on the bum and i was just altogether horrified. The kid stormed off and started walking home – not close… Meanwhile Zac played really well and displayed all the right amounts of sportsmanship.2015-12-13 15.15.29

The painful and expensive task of buying new shoes for Sebastian and Jude.

Sebastian decided to experiment with cupcakes and fondant icing. Delicious experimentation.

2015-12-13 19.17.16

I made a beef bourginon variant for dinner.2015-12-13 20.13.19

And here are my lovely threesome.

2015 weeks! #8: where the week takes you

2015-03-02 07.57.50We were at school bright and early Monday morning as Jude was off to camp (and Zac had choir). Jude was pretty excited about it.

2015-03-02 07.59.13Sometimes work makes me walk all over town. Had to go to ANU for a presentation. It is a pretty campus.

2015-03-03 12.21.28Of course, too much walking didn’t entirely agree with my feet as my shoes aren’t completely worn in yet.

2015-03-03 13.43.08Scrim night so from shoes to skates. Fortunately the sore toes from the shoes were totally fine in the skates.

2015-03-03 19.50.30One of the people I mentor came to visit with her baby. Fun to hold the baby while dispensing counsel. And such a cute one.

2015-03-04 10.33.32More journeying around town for work – this time up to the Big House for meetings.

2015-03-04 12.28.50And the next day I went a bit further – to our offices in Sydney. I try to sit with my back to the window in this boardroom.

2015-03-05 08.54.12And home again…

2015-03-05 17.11.43Home to some adventuring.

2015-03-05 20.58.28Then Friday came and I wasn’t well and couldn’t get any further than bed for work.

2015-03-06 13.27.06George is always happy to hang out when I am spending a day sleeping and working in bed.

2015-03-06 14.26.38I also got to finish James Bradley’s lovely new book Clade while at home and in bed. I love how James is always drawing links between science and art in his book. It is a sad but also hopeful book, about the changes that could be. Thoroughly enjoyed it and read it in no time flat. Highly recommend.

2015-03-06 15.26.47Saturday morning I was feeling better after a day of rest so it was off to Sebastian’s cricket grand final.

2015-03-07 09.12.39Just when we thought the boys were beaten and that was it, they had to come back for Sunday. James accompanied Sebastian then and while the team fought hard, they couldn’t quite make it. So cricket it done until next season.

2015-03-07 12.25.16Beers at Bentspoke with friends in the afternoon. I tried the raspberry one which was…interesting.

2015-03-07 15.54.11We headed off to the night noodle market for dinner.

It was then time for some laser tag at Questacon which was a lot of fun. Initially when I tried to book tickets they were all sold out, but Facebook came to the rescue. We got to do it twice – once because of spare tickets that I managed to find through friends, and once because one of my staff, Beth, won some tickets and generously gave them to me.

2015-03-07 20.36.34We also checked out the Glowcave at the National Library.

Took #perceptualselfies at the National Gallery

Checked out the glow boats in the lake

2015-03-07 19.40.54Saw nature trying to compete with the other lights of Enlighten

And of course admired the projections.

Sunday I enjoyed a quiet day at home. Small boys played chess…

2015-03-08 15.39.19And I whipped up some laksa for dinner.

Weeks! #44: Halloween and other reasons to dress up

2014-10-27 09.42.11-1 - CopyWork! Not the best reason in the world to dress up, but hey.

2014-10-27 20.04.09 - CopyHere is my abandoned skate gear following SkateFit. That Bambi works you hard.  But certainly an excellent reason to get my gear on!

2014-10-28 19.20.33 - CopyWhen dressing up, excellent shoes are called for. Tax return came so I felt more than justified in purchasing the pair I had been stalking.

2014-10-28 23.28.25 - Copy Here is a stolen photo – this is Natasha speaking at the UN Security Council. A proud best-friend moment (one of many).

2014-10-29 07.15.31 - Copy

With glorious mornings like this, why wouldn’t you put on your bike gear and get our for a ride? And here I am all helmeted up.

2014-10-29 07.35.16 - CopyZac likes to dress up nicely (certainly more than his brothers). On the weekend he bought a pair of sunglasses which he loved. After wearing them to school, he told me that while some of his friends liked them, some people had been “sexist and rude.” Zac, however, does not bow easily to peer group pressure, so he has continued wearing them. When (mostly small boy) people ask him why he’s wearing “girls’ sunglasses” he calmly tells them they are his and he bought them with him own money, and moves on.

2014-10-29 08.32.26 - Copy

Breakfast at the Cupping Room with James is both worth dressing up for, and skipping the first half an hour of an all day meeting!

So is breakfast at the Elk & Pea with my friend Melinda who travelled with me to Sri Lanka.

2014-10-30 08.47.33The Realm was looking resplendent for the Migration Agents conference I went and spoke at.

2014-10-30 16.33.56Here is the view from my window on a day when Canberra was looking excellent. And me as I tried squinting out of the window.

And then it was Halloween. This rather frightening looking cat nearly scared me away from the cakes. Nearly.

2014-10-31 15.33.42Into cricket uniform which Zac wore with his usual flair.

And watching cricket for some of us as the sun dressed up the sky.

Time to dress up for Jasmin’s usual Halloween celebrations. I was Deregulation Girl – slayer of red tape.

On Saturday, the boys put on their skating gear. Here are Sebastian and Jude relaxing while Zac was training.

We also got the trains out Saturday night for a family game of Ticket to Ride.

2014-11-01 20.03.49

On Sunday, we put on our bike helmets and rode down to LSR for afternoon tea. Of course, I managed to take a lock I didn’t have the key for, so we had to abandon the bikes and walk home, returning for them later.

And spring is dressing up the garden – here is a passionfruit flower.

Weeks: #42: things anew

2014-10-13 09.21.30New week, new office, new view. This is the first time for nearly four years that I have actually had a view from my office. And I get an iconic bit of Canberra too.

2014-10-13 09.25.12Of course, there was a bit of unpacking to do too.

2014-10-13 12.35.22Turkish lemonade!

2014-10-13 19.38.58More SkateFit – mostly being tortured by Shorty.

2014-10-14 08.30.18I met this guy at the physio. Physio is a pretty regular part of my life between my dodgy neck and my dodgy hip and all the other dodgy bits in between. I have been going to Atlas Physio for about 13 years now and it is a bit like family.

2014-10-14 09.20.34-1Despite high hopes for continuing good weather, it turned cold and wet this week. I wore my footy shoes walking to work.

2014-10-14 09.37.04I was pretty excited to discover this, but then when I had some I discovered – aspartame. Blergh. Oh well, it can come with me overseas for those times I can’t find fizzy caffeinated beverages and am in need.

Hairdresser before and after.

2014-10-15 18.02.35Had a meeting with the Secretary. She remarked on my phone.

2014-10-15 18.46.49Schnitzel night!

2014-10-15 19.10.46Sometimes Ainslie is a very beautiful place to live.

It was up early and off to the airport – not for me this time, but to farewell Sebastian who was off to Melbourne for the Tournament of the Minds final. We had considered whether one of us should fly down on Saturday to see their presentation and so forth, but Sebastian was more than happy to have his weekend away with his friends and we have travelled so much recently, it was nice to not go anywhere.

Off to see the ballet Thursday night. Was rather fun, though I thought the choreography for the men was a lot more interesting than for the women. But very enjoyable nonetheless.

2014-10-17 13.02.16Played in another work soccer game on Friday – this one was the semi final and we managed to win in extra time, taking us to the grand final. I am not sure that my sporting prowess really lies in soccer, but it is fun to have a bit of a run around in the park at lunchtime.

Cricket season is well started now and Friday evening I got to see Zachary bat in his first ever cricket game.

2014-10-17 19.36.31Afterwards, Jude, Zac and I headed to the Dickson Noodle House for dinner.  Up to the usual standard.

2014-10-18 11.54.29Zac continued his biking practice on Saturday with me and on Sunday headed off on biking adventures with Jude. It has been hard to get him off the bike since then!

2014-10-18 15.17.57Skating started up again on Saturday afternoon and Jude and Zac were super happy to be at training.

2014-10-18 19.16.46Bit of adventuring Saturday night. “Quick, beyond the guacamole, I see the dragon!”

2014-10-19 11.20.44

The weather was beautiful again and so I couldn’t resist a ride.

Sunday afternoon we headed to Pod Playgroud to meet up with Jillie and the mini-Peppers. Lots of fun all round.

2014-10-19 15.57.13Jillie couldn’t resist the acorns.

2014-10-19 16.04.42And then it was time to collect Sebastian from the airport – they hadn’t won, but they had had a good time.

2014-10-19 16.42.46

Weeks! #20: just the usual

2014-05-12 08.31.59Sebastian has his new “Leadership class” ie “we’re in Grade 6” shirt. He’s getting so old!

2014-05-12 13.12.30Canberra continues to show its autumn colours.

2014-05-12 13.24.49Lunch with James at LSR is always a nice treat.

2014-05-13 13.57.11I took my shoes to Redpath to get repaired and discovered the perfect solution to my football wet feet. Aren’t they pretty?

2014-05-13 18.51.21

Wore my France Men’s Derby team t-shirt to training. Francophile derby! All my favourite things!

2014-05-15 08.18.12Zac decided he could go without his jumper. And without a long shirt. Or long pants. It was about two degrees.

2014-05-15 18.40.24When I met Natasha last week, I had a very belated birthday gift for Cordelia and a Darth Vader t-shirt for Conrad. This week I received lovely thank you notes.

2014-05-16 09.14.42My new blue toenails match my blue fishnets!

2014-05-16 17.39.58Sometimes, Zac is overcome by fits of uncontrollable laughter. Somewhat like his mother who was occasionally labelled a Giggle Pot in her extreme youth.

Football! We were on oranges duty which we didn’t realise until shortly before we left for footy, so there was a stop at the IGA and I cut them up at the ground.

It was a nice morning for it though. I wore my new football shoes which kept my feet dry, and enjoyed the sunshine.

2014-05-17 11.14.56Collected on the walk back by Team Minkey, we headed to LSR 23 for brunch or early lunch or something.

It was then back to Reid for Zac’s game. Sunshine and sausage.

2014-05-17 12.01.32George did not make himself popular by making himself at home on my velvet jacket.

Then off to junior derby where I caught up with work while watching. Jude and Zac relaxed during Sebastian’s training session. It is great though to see the boys improve from week to week.

2014-05-17 17.33.27Time to open another birthday bottle of gin. This one was from Michelle and Steve. Delicious.

2014-05-17 20.13.28

D&D time with the old gang.

It was World Whisky Day, so took the chance to sample some of my Caol Ila.

2014-05-18 08.52.29To finsih the week: “I don’t know” Man! A superhero for the ages.
