Highlights 2018 Week 2: Sea Fall

Our game of the moment is Sea Fall which we started playing just before Christmas. Sea Fall is a “legacy” game – you play it through once over the course of 12-15 individual games, revealing a story as you go. You also do things like write on the board and tear up cards, which can sometimes be hard for keen board gamers to get past the psychological barrier about damaging your game!

We are currently playing two versions – one with Andrew, Steve and JP and the other with the boys. Things do progress differently in the two games, but James and I have to be careful about transferring meta knowledge between the two games. Anyway, lots of fun building colonies, sinking ships, discovering islands and building cities.

One week down in 2017

This year I am not going to keep myself to a daily or weekly blogging schedule – somethinged life just get away from me. So sometimes it will be daily and sometimes weekly and sometimes less often. If you really want to see an every day perspective check out fralafontaine on instagram.

It was a good first week of the year though – starting as uaual with Jasmin’s birthday celebrations, including seeing Lala Land.

Sebastian baked.

Zac busked.

Mum and Dad visited for a few days and hung out with the boys during the days while James and I worked. We played games, ate out and in, drank wine, exchanged presents and enjoyed being together.

Sebastian and James tried out new cooking methods and we got delicious tempura as a result.

I spent some quality time with George.

And we went to Ikea and tried to infuse dinner with a touch of the Scandinavian.

And there is always time for a sunset walk.

Happy 2017 everyone!

A year in the life 2016 #194: Test Match

Back from the coast and with no internet, the boys took the opportunity to try out one of Zac’s birthday presents from a friend from Adelaide – Test Match. It seemed a lot of fun, but also super competitive. And the boys managed to put their own modern spin on it – they filmed it on their iPad to enable a third umpire to make decisions.

2015 weeks! #22: games and brothers and animals and derby

2015-06-08 10.39.18Public holiday Monday morning and Jude and Zac and I had a short break from the endless derby and hockey of the weekend. Here they are playing an Indonesian game they learned at school using the game board I was given as a gift when I visited Malaysia this year.

2015-06-08 12.24.09It was long before I was out at Lyneham watching Sebastian play hockey.

Then straight back down the parkway to a junior derby bootcamp. Here PureNRG from the SRDL Assassins is sharing her wisdom with the kids.

2015-06-08 15.42.25Clouds.

2015-06-09 12.10.17I was off to Melbourne Tuesday for the first meeting of a new committee I had helped establish, the Australian Industry and Skills Committee. Very impressive bunch of people on the Committee to spend a couple of days with. I was also pretty impressed with my dessert when we went out to dinner.2015-06-09 20.25.44Compulsory hotel room view – staying in the centre of Melbourne.

2015-06-10 08.24.13Back in Canberra, walking Zac to school early for choir.

2015-06-11 08.34.14

2015-06-11 08.35.58Fun new maroon fishnets.

2015-06-11 18.33.35There was much excitement with the arrival of Sam and Tracey on Friday. Jude was especially happy to get his new Star Wars chess set.

On Saturday we left Sam and Tracey to play Weekend Sports Parents, while James and I (and an extra James) did a quick road trip to the Blue Mountains.

2015-06-13 10.37.51James got his elite athlete napping in en route.

2015-06-13 12.43.14We also got to see a giant teddy.

2015-06-13 13.49.17Aren’t my Jameses lovely?

2015-06-13 14.17.44I got in a quick sighting of the Three Sisters.

2015-06-13 14.49.42Then it was time for a bit of derby action.

Saw PureNRG again for the week – unlike when she was with the kids, with SMASH she looks like a tiny person.

2015-06-13 15.56.15Carnage played well, but SMASH are much stronger and we lost by around 100 points. but we scored over 100 points, so we were reasonably pleased with the result.

2015-06-14 11.52.15Back home Zac built some of the lego he’d received before we headed off on an Arboretum excursion.

We also enjoyed a visit to the bonsai collection.

After a lovely lunch, James and Sebastian headed off to indoor cricket and the rest of us followed up with a trip to the zoo.

And to end the evening, there was some Firefly playing.

2015 weeks! #12: pyjama time and other things

2015-03-30 22.06.46Sebastian has been doing woodwork this term and this is the result – a new dice box!

2015-03-31 16.50.15Temporarily felled by virus I spent Tuesday on the couch.

2015-03-31 18.44.31Pizza, food of the gods. Especially when sickness makes most things unattractive.

2015-03-31 19.11.39My birthday flowers were still holding up pretty well.

2015-03-31 19.11.51Zachary doing some more cello practice. He does seem to be enjoying it and I rather like the sound of the cello around the house.

2015-04-01 12.23.26Meetings at Parliament House. Found it full of graduates.

2015-04-01 19.09.50Some Family Munchkin in the evening.

2015-04-02 08.13.27Walked Jude to school for choir. These walks are always filled with interesting conversations.

2015-04-02 21.17.58

Beers with the boys from Capital Carnage for team bonding activities. This year I am benching with both the Dishonour Rollers and Capital Carnage.

No better day than Good Friday to pull out the old duplo and get creative.

Went to dinner at Jackie’s where her garden was looking spectacular and everyone helped out with the preparation.

Jude discovered that maybe he too was interested in jewellery making. Here he is modelling some of Jackie’s work.

2015-04-03 20.09.38An Easter at home is an excellent time for reading and new pyjamas. I finished Bring Up The Bodies which I think I enjoyed even more than Wolf Hall. Really engaging as a story, although perhaps a little bit less of the inner life of Cromwell.

Dinner at Steve and Shell’s on Saturday night. Always good to see the twins and their many moods.

And then to sit around and drink red wine by the fire.2015-04-04 19.27.55

Time for the Easter Bunny…

2015-04-04 23.33.29

Jude decided to tease his brothers, but his spelling could be improved.

2015-04-05 12.09.42And on a quiet Easter Sunday the boys and I did some home interval training. Our collection of weights is slowly increasing. It is quite fun with the boys, and they keep me honest when I want to stop doing pushups after only 15 seconds or so!

2015 weeks! #9: Canberra Week

2015-03-09 11.07.33Canberra Day Monday so how better to start the week than to head down to the newest Canberra spot, Westside, for a skate and a coffee?

Tuesday it was back to school with an early start for Zac for Trebles practice and a lake ride for me.

2015-03-10 07.44.14The Telstra Tower is always a dominant feature in the Canberra landscape. Some days, in some light, it does make me feel like I am living in some sort of future city. This was one of those days.

2015-03-10 11.45.01Discovered that the seat outside my boss’ office is an excellent place to hide and contemplate the world while it appears I have purpose. Eventually he came back to his office though.

2015-03-10 13.15.59Tuesday scrim night = hot and exhausted. But lots of fun.

2015-03-11 21.29.23It is starting to get a bit chilly in the mornings and it feels like autumn so suddenly I am starting to feel like drinking tea in the office.

2015-03-12 10.26.37No D&D this week so we took the Firefly for another spin. It really it a fun game (and I won).

2015-03-12 19.40.52Up early Friday morning for another lake ride. I was disappointed – it was too windy for balloons, but there were some kayakers to bring some colour to a grey morning.

2015-03-13 07.21.15Zac’s brothers were off out for dinner and games at a friends house, so Zac got fancy dinner at one of the many wonderful restaurants of Lonsdale Street with his parentals.

Jude was super excited about Pi Day – he’s been teaching himself digits of Pi and has memorised to about 13.

Another Saturday afternoon of some work and junior derby.

And D&D!

2015 weeks! #3: injury and recovery (and lots of codeine)

2015-01-20 17.49.27So after a couple of weeks of getting myself focused on regular exercise and getting ready for the start of derby training, I pushed myself too hard early Monday morning and managed to do some disc damage to my lower back. I knew I’d hurt it, but I think my muscles and everything were so warmed and stretched after my cardio session (yes, what was I thinking) that it really wasn’t until the end of Monday I realised just how badly injured I was. Tuesday was physio, doctor and codeine, codeine, codeine. And working from home, although having a red hot go at resting in between emails. I tell you, skipping with a rope is clearly the wrong thing to do.

2015-01-19 22.17.51George quite liked hanging out with, or on top of, the convalescing.

2015-01-20 17.43.13

When having back problems, it is important to remember that gin is an excellent muscle relaxant.

2015-01-21 10.48.09So look, I know that going to work when I am actually injured is not an excellent idea and I know I should really just rest and all of that – but I also am in the middle of extra responsibilities and super busy times and it is amazing how much you can cope with on fizzy caffeinated beverages and super doses of codeine. Nonetheless, at times, it was clear that my resilience was rather lower when in severe pain than it is at other times.

2015-01-21 19.14.55

On Wednesday night I gritted my teeth through the pain and we played Sebastian’s D&D version of The Hunger Games. He’d had a bit of a shitty day through no fault of his own, and had done a huge amount of work on the scenario, so we spent some time playing it. He’d done a pretty good job, although there was a lot of focus on food gathering (which I guess would probably be a thing).

2015-01-21 23.45.28At least having to spend some time lying down and resting meant I did get to finish The Peripheral. I really enjoyed it – it reminded me a lot of Virtual Light, but most subtle and clever. Very easy to read and great story with some interesting political and social commentary (as always with Gibson).

2015-01-22 10.06.24Then there was the question of what, of these and other books, to read next (I chose Wolf Hall for a change of pace).

2015-01-22 12.23.31Still school holidays for the boys, and Jude took some time out with lego.

2015-01-22 17.31.19Gin, still a great muscle relaxant.

2015-01-23 11.02.43After being a little less than my most robust on Thursday at work, one of my lovely team, Wendy, brought me flowers on Friday. It is lovely that I have a team who pitches in when needed and without fuss – while I was a bit delicate, they were all willing to pick up extra things and make sure that everything kept running smoothly. With the change in Minister, there have been a few times where one area has had a huge unexpected workload, and other teams have jumped in to help. I’m really proud of my Branch and the way that they are supportive and can pull together and will find solutions that will suit everyone rather than just themselves.

2015-01-24 13.44.41There has been quite a lot of backyard cricket these holidays. The boys will pop outside for a quick round quite regularly.

2015-01-24 13.46.39

While at the Bont International, I had ordered some customised Bonts. The only problem – the sales dude forgot to write down my size. So when James got his shiny new skates, he also sent me through several pairs to size myself. Of course, the worst thing was that for most of the week I couldn’t bend over to try them on. By Saturday I was able.

2015-01-24 18.23.04My back was repaired enough by Saturday to make laksa. Delicious, delicious laksa.

While James was at training on Sunday, I took the boys to Casaurina Sands where we enjoyed some river swimming. It was quite a lovely day, and quite a strong flowing river.

2015-01-25 18.03.08Some more resting after our river adventures, finding Wolf Hall very enjoyable (and comparing the perspectives with those from the Tudors!).

2015-01-25 20.55.32To end the week, games, cheese and roller derby gossip. A most excellent combination with excellent people.
