2018 Highlight Week 10: gym daze

Had had a good start to the year with the gym and activity – met my activity target each day and had been getting to the gym most morningd. Then, of course, I managed to do something to one of the disks in my lower back. But no fear, my physio told me what I couldn’t do, but encouraged me to do what I could do. And my PT developed a program around the things I could do. So I havemanaged to continue on without missing any targets and with a minimisation of the frustration that these injuries generally create.

Gym buddies

Sebastian has decided to join me at the gym this year and seems to be enjoying it. He’s mastered bosu squats (better than me) and has even done sets of 20kg bench press.

I was very excited to finally deadlift 100kg…the best thing about lifting the heavies is how easily quantifiable your progress actually is.

I did manage to injure my back, but tried not to let it completely break my gym habits. One of the bonuses of having a gym buddy is that on the mornings when you don’t feel like it, you have a reason to get going, and then you still feel better at the end.

Back is much better now, and we are back to usual – and having mornings where sometimes we just feel trashed. But we do love #gymlife.

A year in the life 2016 #205: pilates

Again trying to maintain good habits – I have started pilates at work again. It has been 18 months since I did it last, so a few sore muscles afterwards!

A year in the life…day 194: sunrise makes everything pretty

After a month or so of no morning rides – travel, work, illness, tiredness, extreme cold and a touch of laziness have kept me off the bike before breakfast – today I dragged myself out of bed early in an attempt to revive the fitness regime. At first I thought it was a bit of a gloomy, overcast morning, but as I arrived at the lake the light of the rising sun was beginning to hit it and make everything beautiful.

General update

This is just to say that I might be slightly less regular with the postings over the next few weeks as I make the concerted effort to finish the full draft of my thesis so I can get it to my supervisor. I have only 39 pages of paper editing to go, then I have to finish getting it all into the electronic document. So I am trying to do a half hour to an hour of electronic editing a night, whcih does rather cut into blogging time.

I have also started a program of exercise at the other end of the day – at least three times a week I'm getting up early so I can do a half hour of exercise before everyone else in the house wakes up. I'm not going ompletely crazy though – our current schedule means that to do this I only need to get up at 7.10am….And I still then do the other incidental exercise like riding or walking to work.

so I'm trying to be quite disciplined in order to get the thesis done and ensure all my trousers fit me! In some ways it is easier to put in the extra hours when the end is in sight!
