2015 weeks! #43: getting to the end of things and more

2015-11-02 08.31.18Everyone else had left the house in Adelaide when I got up on Monday morning, but I did have some furry companionship, purring extremely loudly.

2015-11-02 09.31.54Goodbye beach.

2015-11-02 12.35.58Because I only had one real thing to do while in Adelaide (this wasn’t a work trip as such), I got to wander the mall and catch up with Sam, Lucy and my friend Karen. It was a pleasant day.

2015-11-02 19.22.55But then it was time to fly home.

2015-11-02 21.25.09James picked me up and we went for a Bentspoke debrief.

Back in the office – the new office. We moved again but fortunately this time it was only twenty metres down the floor.

2015-11-05 13.34.46The colours of moving.

It was Beer Week, so we headed to 86 for a Beer vs Wine matched degustation. With 9 courses of food, that was 18 courses of alcohol and the staff didn’t stint on the top ups. The beer, all from La Sirene, was excellent and I highly recommend it.

2015-11-06 10.58.21I was a touch hungover the next day, yes, why do you ask?

Another chance to watch the sun set while watching Jude play cricket.

2015-11-07 11.38.43Lazy start to a Saturday.

2015-11-07 12.57.06Sebastian got inspired to make chocolate icecream.

Saturday night we had an end of year DHR celebration, with awards to best players, presents for all and a wonderful cake by Demo. There was also a fair bit of drinking and time in the pool.  It was a great end to a terrific season – the team worked really hard this year and their play reflected that. Next year though, they’ll take out number one, I’m sure.

2015-11-08 13.38.28My other team, Capital Carnage, were still busy putting in the hard work for upcoming Nationals and a firm intention to beat our number 7 position last year.

2015-11-08 15.02.27For some inspiration we watched the end of the magnificent tussle between Gotham and VRDL. So close Victoria! Bonnie Thunders is amazing though – and the way she holds it together…

Time for a picnic by the lake to celebrate Sean’s birthday. Lots of friends and food and drink.

2015 weeks! #42: constant motion

2015-10-29 08.46.52Managed to get some walking to school in – this time with Zac.

2015-10-29 15.17.59A busy day of running about all over town. Had a half hour between things so managed to do work while refreshmenting.

2015-10-29 18.53.22This is what my hair looks like when I have put my bike helmet on and off about four times during the day.

2015-10-29 19.46.28Dinner at the Elk & Pea. Jude took the opportunity to go and chat with the chef to compare notes on the almond sauce that goes with the jerk chicken. Jude made his own version while I was in Manila, and the sauce wasn’t quite right, so he needed to compare ingredients and approach.

2015-10-30 15.29.13It is full spring at the moment. Flowers everywhere.

Friday night cricket with Jude. And my laptop briefly to finish a few work things. And a lovely sunset.

2015-10-31 12.16.34

Saturday it was Turner fete and Zacky singing in the Trebles. I think maybe the performance was a bit high concept for a fete, but lovely singing at any rate.

2015-10-31 19.47.03George selfie time.

2015-11-01 16.11.45After a few weeks of trying to line up a time, Zac got to skype with Sienna his best friend who has moved to Jakarta. Small children are weird to watch talk to each other.

2015-11-01 19.25.15Flew to Adelaide Sunday night. But not actually back to the 1970s.

2015-11-01 19.55.09The beach at night – I was staying with Natasha so saw the last of the sunset.

2015-11-01 22.28.47On the flight over I finished this. Strange and thoughtful. I thought the lead character was a bit of an idiot at times, but then I think you are supposed to.

2015 weeks! #41: games of all types and bits of life in between

2015-10-19 12.36.15Monday involved another view from a plane as I flew to Sydney to meet with a delegation from Korea.

2015-10-19 18.46.09

After two hours of talking to the Koreans, they presented me this beautiful scroll – which says “strongly but smoothly” which is a perfect motto. They then told me it was worth about $1000 so any hopes of hanging it in our new house once built were dashed because I have to declare it and hand it over to the Department as an asset. But at least I can hang it in my office.

Tuesday morning was walking to school with Jude and Zac.

2015-10-20 14.43.52An interesting presentation on the workforce of the future and the impact of technology. There are some gaps that robots and software can’t fill – or it will remain economically sensible for humans continue to do those jobs for some time to come.

2015-10-20 20.28.14A slightly failed pavlova by Jude became Eton Mess with lemon curd, mango and blueberries.

2015-10-21 12.08.27Here I am early in the Senate Estimates day. Waiting in the waiting room.

2015-10-21 15.04.53Here I am, six hours later.

2015-10-21 12.46.38At least it gave me time to admire the Parliament House light fittings.

2015-10-21 19.20.54Sun beginning to set.

2015-10-21 20.31.52Off to training again. Three weeks in a row is probably a record for this year. Oh well, next year perhaps there won’t be so much travel and injury. I managed 22 laps in 5 minutes, which wasn’t entirely terrible given the year of injury and lack of training – but given Sebastian and Jude are both 27+ I think I need to lift my game.

2015-10-21 21.59.48Post derby beer with James is very pleasant. We do like our quiet beers together at Bentspoke.

Thursday night was my first cricket outing for the season – watching Jude’s first game. He batted well and did a solid wicket keeping job as his team won comprehensively so all good. And I got to chat to a friendly magpie.

2015-10-22 20.27.08

Some more Arkham Horror – it was a horrible night of slaughter.

2015-10-23 17.27.10Friday night Happy Hour at work. Subho, our Deputy Secretary, was exceedingly pleased with himself for winning the AFL footy competition, while Peter from my branch took out the NRL competition. I did not participate as that would require me to pay attention to either AFL or NRL.

2015-10-23 18.41.11G&T with my Sinkonah tonic syrup. Yummy.

2015-10-23 19.00.49Sebastian received his black cthulhu in the mail – it was particularly evil.

2015-10-24 13.08.41Jude and Zac filled in some spare weekend with some old school game playing: fighting it out with Risk.

2015-10-24 16.56.27The boys were back at derby training on Saturday.

2015-10-25 12.08.34Sunday morning was Zac’s first cricket game for the season. I scored which required a fair bit of concentration – there are a lot of extras. And there is the weird multiplier etc. I managed to get myself sunburnt in the process also.

2015-10-25 18.21.21Finished off the week with a touch of D&D.

2015 weeks! #40: this and that

2015-10-12 12.50.56I caught up with one of my directors, Scott, for the first time since his return from Taipei Monday morning. He returned with a “Damper Baby” for me – this is a very Northern Asia kind of thing – it is a cartoon style character based on the damper at the top of Taipei 101, the tallest building in Taipei. Look I don’t really understand it either.

2015-10-12 19.02.06Sebastian loves a selfie… or not.

2015-10-12 20.45.24For some time now, the boys have been saving to purchase a games-dedicated laptop – James promised them we’d go halves. Finally enough money had been gathered – fortunately we didn’t get all $600+ in coins.

2015-10-13 20.42.44

Tuesday night was spent watching ERRD games and debriefing at Terror’s house.

2015-10-14 08.49.09On Wednesday morning I got to see our newest Minister speak.

2015-10-14 13.29.52I have decided to become better at bringing my own lunch – it is better for time, money and not eating too much fattening stuff. Of course, if I am going to eat salad, it is going to feature smoked chicken and goat’s cheese and other fabulousness.

2015-10-14 20.41.45Training on Wednesday. Trying to get back into the regular habit. Finally starting to understand the balance of my Bonts too.

2015-10-15 07.37.41

Unexpectedly foggy morning Thursday when trying to catch a plane. Fortunately there were no delays.

Another quick trip to Sydney and back.

2015-10-15 18.55.58Dinner with the boys (and additional men folk) at Edgar’s.

2015-10-15 20.33.39Playing Eldritch Horror and eating creme brulee Sebastian had made. A fabulous combination.

2015-10-16 09.26.33Sebastian eating his sweet potato and feta pasta – probably for breakfast. It is his favourite thing and he’ll eat it for breakfast or lunch or dinner or whenever.

2015-10-16 14.41.32And then we were off to Port Macquarie as described in the previous post. I didn’t realise Zac was being cheeky for the compulsory road trip selfie.

And a weekend of derby ensued….

2015-10-17 11.06.59

Derby for boys small and large!

2015-10-16 14.42.34So off we drove to Port Macquarie for a weekend of boy derby. This year ERRD ran an additional weekend of competition – ERRD Reloaded – which featured men’s teams, junior teams and a couple of developmental women’s teams.

Sebastian – SeaBash for the weekend – played the first family game for the weekend. He captained the team, called his first official review, blocked, jammed and did an apex jump which drew cheers from the crowd. His team didn’t win, but he did a great job.

seabash

Here’s a Steven Craddock photo of him jamming.

Carnage then played SMASH. A couple of key players down, we didn’t do as well as we had in our game a month or so ago, but we held our own and fought hard.

Jude (Beathoven) had his first game for the green team – he did lots of jamming and was successful and had a heap of fun.

jude and scaryI stole this photo from Steven Craddock because I love the camaraderie between the CRDL junior skaters and how the older girls are really sweet and supportive of Beat

After three games between us, it was back to the hotel for a swim and relax.

We found lovely food and drinks in Port Mac.

2015-10-17 20.28.56And the boys made the most of the games room where we were staying.

Sunday there were five games between the men folk – including SeaBash vs Beathoven. In the end, both teams ended up with two wins out of three. The junior derby was not being played for sheepstations – more a chance for everyone to have a go, so the results weren’t what they would have been if they had played their best line ups each time. But it was a great chance for the boys to play some derby with some others – and the mix of ability of was extensive; from Team Australia players through to complete newbies – and have some fun.

Carnage played two more games – against Coffs Chaos and the Tweed Valley Vikings and won both convincingly. Which was excellent, particularly as we are due to play the Vikings at Nationals. And no one got injured!

A good derby weekend all round – all that was left was the long Sunday night drive home.
