ERRD Smackdown

2013-10-05 12.26.39This weekend was devoted to the Eastern Regional Roller Derby Smackdown, a tournament with 18 teams from 15 leagues. We ended up with a tough draw, facing the Canberra Roller Derby League’s C team, the Capital Brawlers who came second in the tournament over all (our of 12) and the Blue Mountains Roller Derby Free Sisters who came third over all. Those two games were reasonably close and the team played really well. Our game against the Free Sisters was particularly good. But as the only team with no wins in our pool, we missed out on the finals and instead went into a consolation final versus the Fresh and the Furious, a combined Coastal Knockouts/South West Sydney Rockets team. That game we smashed, winning 545-17, and taking the chance to try out some plays and give everyone a chance to jam. For the weekend Diazaslam the team named best jammer, Terrorsmackdal best blocker and Bloody GoreJess most valuable player

So Saturday was the tournament for the team. James was NSOing for the weekend (non-skating official for the uninitiated), I was line-up manager for our team and the boys avid spectators – even though poor Zacky got sick on Saturday and ended up vomiting three times. Sunday was a day of watching and there was some great derby on display. The final between the Vice City Rollers and the Sydney Assassins was particularly impressive. We all had fun – the boys spent lots of time talking with the various VDL people about, I watched endless derby and James’ skills penalty tracking were hones. And it is always fun to hang out with the team who are an awesome bunch of people.

As usual, for good derby shots from the weekend you can check out David Mackie on Facebook but here are some of my photos from the weekend.
