Going home again

So after our week and a bit of Adelaide, it was time to head home again, only this time without Sebastian who has a whole extra fortnight with Nana and Poppa.

We left bright and early and then stopped for an early lunch in Ouyen.

The good old Fairy Dell cafe in Ouyen is a regular stopping point for us. In addition to doing traditional Australian-style take-away hamburgers (complete with beetroot) it has the advantage of an outside area complete with slide and also a bird aviary. And, of course, toilets.

Ouyen is also home of the Vanilla Slice Challenge. I made sure I purchased an award-winning vanilla slice from the bakery three doors up before we set off again.

After that, it was onwards to the Hay Plains. This is what the road mostly looks like for three hours.

A great big nothing to be seen anywhere. The highlight between Hay and Balranald is passing the one irrigation sprinkler on the right side of the road that seems to have been there for at least the last 12 years.

This is what it did to Zac…

Unfortunately, Jude didn't follow suit…

But we got home – the trip home was 10 minutes shorter than the trip there, so fairly consistent it must be said. And all I can say is, thank goodness for in-car DVDs. I'm not sure how anyone used to cope with the under 5 set on the long, long road trip!
